Homemade nectar seems to be the favourite feed of hummingbirds.  Especially homemade syrup that can be so easy to prepare that you will be amazed.  Simple syrup is made of 1 part of sugar and 4 parts of water.  Mix the contents until the sugar is dissolved.  Avoid using red dye in the mixture.  Fill the hummingbird feeders with this mixture and place outside.  The extra syrup can be refrigerated.

Changing the nectar in a feeder every couple of days is the best way to keep it fresh.  Wash the feeders regularly using vinegar and hot water.  Rinse well.

And remember, all that sugar attracts ants.  The best and most effective way to keep the insects from crawling all over the feeder and discouraging hummingbirds from feeding – is with an ant moat, a container of water that sits between whatever the insects use to crawl towards the nectar.  The moat is filled with water and ants are unable to cross over the water to get to the nectar.
