We love tacos in our house. They’re quick, super easy and are always a crowd {and budget} pleaser. And for us, an added benefit is that they’re gluten free {when eaten with corn tortillas}. we’re always looking for recipes that our whole family can enjoy together. This is one recipe that our kids ask for on a regular basis.

Trust me, no one will even notice that it’s make with ground turkey. Well unless you tell them. It’s a healthier, leaner version of tacos that’s chock full of good for them veggies. there are carrots, onions, bell peppers. And we can’t forget the protein packed black beans. The mixture is bursting with flavor and texture.

These tacos are so flavorful that we normally don’t add any additional toppings but if you’d like some options: romaine lettuce, homemade salsa, or tomatoes would work quite nicely.

Here’s a little tip for a recipe remix: If you have extra left over it’s great to make nachos the next day!

Ingredients Need In Turkey Tacos.

1 Tablespoon canola or vegetable oil
1 pound ground turkey
3 teaspoons ground cumin
3 teaspoons ground chili powder
large pinch of salt
2 medium carrots- grated
1/2 large onion – minced
2 cloves garlic -minced
1 green bell pepper – seeded and finely chopped
8 ounces tomato sauce
1 anise pod OR 1 teaspoon anise seeds
15.5 ounces black beans – rinsed and drained
1 box corn taco shells

How To Make Turkey Tacos.

  1. Into a large deep sided pan, add oil and heat over medium – high heat. While oil is heading, sprinkle cumin, chili powder and salt onto turkey and set aside.
  2. To the oil add: carrot, onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Cook approximately 2-4 minutes until the mixture starts to soften.
  3. Add turkey meat and allow to sit for approximately 1-2 minutes without touching/stirring. When the turkey starts to brown, cook approximately 6-8 minutes breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon until it is cooked through.
  4. Add tomato sauce, star anise pod and cook an additional 2-4 minutes until mixture has thickened.
  5. Add beans, reduce heat to low and allow mixture to simmer.
  6. WHILE meat is simmering, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and cook taco shells according to package directions.
  7. When taco shells have cooked, discard anise pod and distribute the turkey mixture evenly between shells.
